Republican campaigners for Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad got to the Sept. 20 gubernatorial debate in Burlington early and set up campaign signs. Campaigners for Democratic challenger Jack Hatch said his supporters attended a rally in Des Moines before arriving in Burlington for the one-hour debate.

Political rhetoric seems more heated, and the discussion nastier, than ever.

“Everybody is into the spin game in one way or another. And of course the professionals, if you get a practicing politician, it’s like trying to nail a piece of Jell-O to the wall. They are really good at giving non-answers and answering your questions with another question,” said Jim Bohannon, host of the popular radio news talk programs “The Jim Bohannon Show” and “America in the Morning.”
