Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has been picked by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next U.S. ambassador to China, multiple sources have reported.
Why Branstad? Because the long-time Republican governor and Iowa have built significant economic and diplomatic relationships with China since the 1980s. He returned recently from a trip to the country in November.
Branstad said in a summer 2016 IowaWatch interview that Iowa needs to maintain trade relationships with China and get good business deals with partners in that country.
