How student debt is hurting the housing market

While the overall housing market is starting to move upwards, the percentage of first-time homebuyers is decreasing, a survey by the National Association of Realtors shows. High student debt and high unemployment rates are among the factors cited for the decrease.

Help wanted as building projects boom

Iowa is expected to see $9 million in large building projects this year, but builders are reporting shortages of skilled workers. Some estimate the industry will see a shortage of about 2,730 workers annually over the next seven years, based on demand, retirements and the number of new trained workers coming into the industry.
