Veterans parade through the Iowa State Fairgrounds during the fair's veterans' day on Aug. 14, 2017.

The Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism-IowaWatch.org invites you to an evening of live storytelling featuring military service veterans’ true stories on Thursday, Nov. 9, starting at 7 p.m. The event will be at Old Brick, 26 E. Market St., Iowa City and co-sponsored by AARP Iowa and Iowa Public Radio.

Guests will have the chance to learn about the diverse experiences of six service veterans who will tell their stories. The event is modeled after the National Public Radio program, The Moth. Guests also will be able to enjoy free food, beverages and activities centering on the program’s title, “Roll Call: Veterans Share Their True Stories.” Charity Nebbe of Iowa Public Radio will be the evening’s host.

Proceeds will support IowaWatch and its mission to produce independent, non-partisan, explanatory and investigative reports on matters of public interest and to further the education of young journalists in Iowa.

Tickets are available for suggested donations. Go here to order tickets.

Additional donations are accepted gratefully because all donations IowaWatch receives through the end of this year can be matched by a News Match funded by three national foundations: the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Democracy Fund and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication event planning students taught by Heather Spangler, the school’s event planning certificate coordinator, are planning “Roll Call: Veterans Share Their True Stories” as a class project.

The Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism-IowaWatch, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that does investigative and public affairs journalism; makes that journalism available free on its website, IowaWatch.org, and through media partners; and trains college students to do this journalism at an ethical, high level. Foundations, grants, service contracts and individual donations support the center.
