Thank you to those who supported and came to our live storytelling event, “Fringe: True Stories From Outsiders,” in Iowa City on Thursday, March 29.

An audience of about 65 people heard Daniel Tardy, Veronica Hamly, Ryan Hall, John Paul Derryberry and Miriam Alarcon Avila tell stories about ways Iowans feel like outsiders. Read this Daily Iowan story to learn more about what they said.

John Paul Derryberry tells about troubled youth he works with, making his point here wearing a transformers costume made from cardboard.

IowaWatch co-hosted the with Iowa City’s upcoming April event Flyover Fest. The event was held to bring attention to voices that often are moved to society’s fringe and as a fundraiser for IowaWatch and Flyover Fest.

Thanks, too, to our sponsors and emcee Lindsey Moon and Iowa Public Radio for its support.

A University of Iowa Event Planning Certificate class is organizing the event as a class project under the direction of Heather Spangler, event planning certificate program coordinator at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Spangler is a member of the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism board of directors.

IowaWatch is part of the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that does investigative and public affairs journalism; makes that journalism available free on its website and through media partners; and trains college students to do this journalism at an ethical, high level.
