Smaller Iowa cities sometimes decline a grant from the DOT’s city bridge replacement program, sometimes because the city does not have the money to pay 20 percent of the construction cost. Last year, the program offered funds to nine cities, four declined.

Iowa is expected to see $9 million in large building projects this year, but builders are reporting shortages of skilled workers. Some estimate the industry will see a shortage of about 2,730 workers annually over the next seven years, based on demand, retirements and the number of new trained workers coming into the industry.
