Iowa’s asbestos inspectors overloaded

In Iowa, one inspector enforces U.S. Environmental Protection Agency asbestos removal regulations, overseeing as many as 4,500 asbestos removal projects each year. Another inspector enforces federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration asbestos regulations.

Help wanted as building projects boom

Iowa is expected to see $9 million in large building projects this year, but builders are reporting shortages of skilled workers. Some estimate the industry will see a shortage of about 2,730 workers annually over the next seven years, based on demand, retirements and the number of new trained workers coming into the industry.
