University of Iowa research funding: Debating disclosure

More than 70 UI physicians are expected to generate some of their salary through research funding, much of which comes from pharmaceutical companies. Most of UI’s physicians who receive research funding also are faculty members who are paid to teach and see patients. The UI doesn’t maintain a public database of the funding, though some experts and doctors say there is value in doing so. In 2012 alone, UI was paid nearly $53 million by private businesses to perform research.
