The Johnson County Attorney’s offce is seeking a retrial of the case involving University of Iowa professor, Toshiki Itoh, guilty on a charge of abusing his lab assistant.
In the last day of Toshiki Itoh’s exhausting trial for sexually and physically assaulting his lab assistant, the attorneys made their closing arguments and sent the jury out of the courtroom to begin a deliberation process that will continue tomorrow.
Referring to a PowerPoint display of photos of the lab assistant’s bruises and statements of apparent admission by the defendant, prosecuting attorney Elizabeth Beglin asked the jury to find Itoh guilty on all counts.
University of Iowa medical personnel testified Tuesday that a lab assistant to a professor had been beaten and sexually assaulted by her supervisor numerous times over a period of one and half years in 2007 and 2008.
Testifying in the trial of Assistant Professor Toshiki Itoh, 47, who is accused of sexual abuse in the third degree and two counts of assault causing bodily injury, student health physician Marina Usacheva said the lab assistant told her she had been “hit and kicked by her boss” and said that he had touched her breasts.
